Traffic will be delayed on Highway 1 southbound today between Leigh Road overpass and Millstream Road overpass.
This has happened as a result of a motor vehicle accident around 8:40 am at the Spencer Road onramp in which a dump truck flipped over. DriveBC shows on one of its highway cameras the moment the truck began to roll over. The trailer flipped onto its side, with the truck cab flipping after that.
At 9 am West Shore RCMP posted in social media about the incident.
The traffic delays were expected for a period of about four (4) hours, said City of Langford Engineering at 10 am today. Reportedly the highway surface cleanup was done by 12:45 pm.
The recommended detour was to use West Shore Parkway.
Minor injuries:
West Shore RCMP said the driver suffered minor injuries in the crash and was taken to hospital for assessment.
No other vehicles were involved in the rollover incident.
Crashes in the past:
That stretch of Highway 1 was where two fatal crashes happened in 2019. After those crashes, the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure installed vertical lane dividers and widened some of the road area.
Construction work in the area:
Last week, it was announced that blasting has been set in motion for construction development on Leigh Road between Highway 1 and Goldstream Ave in Langford until year-end 2022. It was suggested last week that drivers who normally use the route to exit Hwy 1 at Leigh Road might want to exit Hwy 1 at Millstream or West Shore Parkway instead.
