The new Urban Food Resilience Initiatives Society (UFRIS) non-profit organization will host an information booth on Saturday March 30 in Sooke.

The booth will be one of the many food and agriculture related displays at Sooke Seedy Saturday being held 10 am to 3 pm at Sooke Seedy Saturday at Sooke Community Hall on Shields Road in Sooke.

Admission to the March 30 event is free, donations welcome; door prizes. On this Easter long weekend there could be a robust turnout of gardening enthusiasts and families from Sooke and the broader Greater Victoria area.

Growing food in your own back yard can contribute to budget resilience and better health.

The Urban Food Resilience Initiatives Society launched this year to take leadership in promoting the growing of natural food in urban spaces.

Healthier food in healthier spaces:
. Education about local food growing
. Development of urban food gardens
. Improvement of regional soils
. Community education
. Municipal infrastructure
. Emergency preparedness

UFRIS is a region-wide organization based out of Langford.

The Urban Food Resilience Initiatives Society is based in the west shore of Vancouver Island, BC, Canada.

UFRIS is grateful for a Grant in Aid from the City of Langford, to help with startup costs. UFRIS will take part in the launch of the first community garden in Langford which will be built at Porcher Park in central Langford. UFRIS has also applied for a project grant from the District of Sooke.

Directors of the new organization are Mary Brooke, B.Sc. (urban food consultant), Rob Martin (former mayor of Colwood), and Dean Ross (landscape entrepreneur).
