The Liberal leadership race now officially has six candidates.
The Liberal leadership candidate profiles were announced this afternoon (around 3 pm Pacific Time) by the Liberal Party of Canada.
As evident from the campaigns so far, the front runners are expected to be Mark Carney and Chrystia Freeland. The other four candidates are Jaime Battiste, Frank Bayliss, Dr. Ruby Dhalla, and Karina Gould.

After a robust and secure nation-wide process, registered Liberals “across our movement” will choose their new Leader on March 9, the party states today.
None of the candidates are from BC.
Political context:
The next Liberal leader immediately becomes the next prime minister of Canada.
Opposition parties have declared at various times that they will execute a non-confidence vote in the House of Commons, once MPs are back in the House on March 24.
For now, the scheduled election date is October 20, 2025 but if the government falls then the election will come sooner — now likely in April, May or June.
Economic context:
This Liberal leadership challenge comes as Canadian citizens and businesses are dealing with the oncoming threat of tariffs by the United States.
Today BC Premier David Eby predicted a period of tough economic conditions and hopes that the federal government will continue to be responsive and responsible about the border as well as having a robust economic strategy ready.
