Christmas season in the west shore! In years pre-COVID, various developers and other businesses around the west shore would hold various Christmas season events and provide donations to various charities.
This year the City of Langford has consolidated much of that under their own Christmas in Langford banner. It makes for a good marketing punch for the city, but means that other sorts of charities may become overlooked.
“The sponsorship money raised is to fund the various activities,” says the city’s manager of business development and events, Donna Petrie.
In previous years the cost of those events was underwritten by the City. That has included the horse carriage tours, crafts for kids at Veterans Memorial Park, a Christmas colouring sheet for kids, ice carving at the City Centre Park rink, Langford Holiday Village next to Boulder House, and more.
Donating to local food bank:
The City says that it also donates to the Goldstream Food Bank through the Mayor’s Golf Tournament fundraising as well as through initiatives planned by City staff, such as coat collection and home baking.
Sponsors:
This first year of the coordinated “Christmas in Langford” donation project includes these sponsors who are primarily in the development and construction sectors, as well as larger businesses.
The sponsorship levels that were offered this year are Title ($10,000), Gold ($5,000), Silver ($2,500), Bronze ($1,000) and in-kind.
This year’s list of sponsors includes:

- GOLD – Keycorp, Ledcor Group, Verity Construction, Slegg Building Materials, Victoria Contracting, Southpoint, West Shore Developers Association
- SILVER – Jagpal Development Ltd, Capital City Paving, Westhills, WA Architects, GFL, Draycor Construction Ltd, Oakcrest Park Estates Ltd, Beedie, Raylec Power LP, Plexxis Software

Consolidating the donations:
This approach to collect large sums from the business community tends to consolidate the direction of donations through the City lens.
Next year the sponsorship reach will be broader within the business community, says Petrie.
