The Change-Makers Gathering Festival takes place Saturday, June 10, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. This is a free community event, and everyone is welcome.

Traditional Territory of Coast Salish Communities – Indigenous Knowledge Keepers of all ages are bringing the Change-Makers Gathering Festival back to Langford’s Starlight Stadium on Saturday, June 10, 2023, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The festival offers free cedar weaving and drum making workshops, language lessons and storytelling all led by Indigenous Elders and Knowledge Keepers. Other activities include performances by Indigenous drum and dance groups and an Indigenous artisan’s market.

The festival is based on the Elder’s teaching, If you feel it in your heart, you should do it and not take it home with you.

“The meaning behind this teaching is if you feel the need to say kind words, offer a kind gesture, you should follow your heart and do it.” said Chief Russ Chipps, Sc’ianew First Nation. “We are so proud of our youth, Elders, and Knowledge Keepers who are sharing our culture, knowledge, and friendship.”

Bannock tacos will be served to all guests in attendance at no charge, sponsored by Fortis BC. Bannock tacos are a cultural meal enjoyed at many Indigenous community events. Daphne Underwood from T’Sou-ke First Nation taught the cooks at Starlight Stadium how to make bannock, gifting them with Indigenous Knowledge.

“We want to create an opportunity for all community members to spend time together and have the opportunity to experience some Indigenous culture and knowledge sharing,” said Charla Huber, event organizer. “There are people who want to learn more and aren’t sure where to start.”

Huber posted on Twitter last week: “See you next Saturday. Working w/ #Langford celebrating Indigenous Knowledge. Come learn from my friends who are Elders, Knowledge Keepers, Drummers, Dancers and Future Leaders share their culture, teaching, and wisdom. Barrier free event, no charge for food or activities.”

“We are so honoured to work with Indigenous leaders, Knowledge Keepers and youth to bring Change-Makers Gathering Festival back to the community,” said Langford Mayor Scott Goodmanson. “Indigenous people need to be supported, respected, and have their cultures honoured. It starts with understanding and that’s what this festival provides.”

“This is a very special lunch for us to participate in and knowing that we are all receiving guidance from Daphne and honouring her and her teachings, is so meaningful,” said Carmen LeBlanc, Community and Indigenous Relations Manager with FortisBC.
