On a bright sunny Friday afternoon the regular coming and going of customers at Colwood Corners shopping mall heard fire alarm bells.

The repetitive clanging continued for about 15 to 20 minutes before the false-alarm sound could be turned off.

Colwood Fire Chief Bryan Erwin arrived on scene to discover that an alarm had been accidentally set off during building renovation.

Employees of Coast Capital Savings and Westland Insurance stood outside for a while, awaiting resolution of the scene.

Stores located opposite to the impacted building were not affected; customers continued to come and go at London Drugs, Bosley’s, a liquor store and other retail locations.

Safety obviously comes first, but significant resources get used in a scenario like this. One fire truck and the fire chief’s vehicle were on site. About four or five firefighters attended in all.
