As of 4 pm this Wednesday December 26 Boxing Day, there are 6,209 BC Hydro customers without power, which is down from the 8,946 outages on Christmas night and down from the evening of December 24 when 17,629 were without power.

Most of today’s outages (5,653 or 91%) are on Vancouver Island; more than half (3,885 or 62.5%) are in the South island area. And now 550 are without power in the mainland interior.

BC Hydro says: “Crews continue to repair the damage from the storm last week. Trouble orders are being assigned to crews as damage assessments are completed. Due to the extent of the damage it will take several more days to restore power for all customers on Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands. All available crews and resources will continue to work throughout the day and night until all customers are restored. We appreciate your patience and will continue to provide updates as they become available.”

Since yesterday, the lower mainland outages are new to the outage profile. Over Christmas only Vancouver Island and the Gulf Island had outages to contend with.

Tonight’s continued outages on south Vancouver Island are in Central Saanich, Duncan, and North Cowichan, as well as on Ganges Island, Saturna Island, and Piers Island.

Wind that came from several directions during the December 20 storm brought down multiple trees and power poles, many that blocked traffic including repair vehicles. The lack of access for assessment and repair has slowed down the process of power restoration.
