“So much has gone on over the past few days,” says Juan de Fuca Emergency Program Coordinator Jeri Grant, as the west side of Vancouver Island deals with the aftermath of the windstorm that hit most coastal areas starting Thursday December 20.

“We had and still have power outages, some flooding from the storm surge along Gordon’s Beach, trees down that are blocking roads throughout the Juan de Fuca Electoral Area, and even a tree on a house,” says Grant.

“Things are slowly getting back to normal and now another wind warning,” she says. “I am so grateful for our volunteers, first responders, road crews and of course, those working for BC Hydro who have been working around the clock to get power restored here on Vancouver Island, the Gulf Islands and the mainland.”

JdF Emergency Program organizers are reminding people now that the power is restored, to replenish fuel for their generators [see tips for safe use of portable generators].

“When you hear there’s a wind warning, make sure you charge all the electronic devices,” says Grant.

If you see downed power lines, stay 10 metres away and report to BC Hydro.
