Earlier today, a large tree fell on a power line during some property redevelopment on Glen Lake Road near Springhill Road in Langford. Six spans of line came down and two poles were broken.
At the start, almost 3,200 BC Hydro customers in Langford, Colwood and Metchosin were without power, though by 6 pm that was down to 611 customers without power mostly in Langford (north of Tayberry Terrace, east of West Shore Parkway, west of Flannagan Place, and south of Langford Parkway).
A restoration time of about 2 am Thursday morning January 10 was promised, so crews are working through this evening and into the night.
Around 8 pm, about 10 trucks were on site, along with large night-light setups, power generators for equipment, and tree trimming equipment. About 18 personnel were on site in two locations — across the road from Belmont Secondary School at Springhill Road (where a large tree was being cut to pieces, one limb at a time) and at the Alouette roundabout where lines were being restored into place.
Traffic has been closed along Glen Lake Road since the noon-time incident, between the roundabout at Alouette Drive to the walkway at Goudy Turf (3048 Glen Lake Rd). BC Transit busses #54/#55 are taking detours (see footnote).
Bystanders watched the crews this evening, standing adequately back on wet sidewalks to watch safely from afar.
Power restoration for those remaining 611 customers is estimated to be 2 am on Thursday morning, January 10.
The closed road offers access to Goudy Field and Belmont Secondary School parking lots. However, the school parking lot was open this evening at its main entrance on Langford Lake Road.
BC Hydro spokesperson Ted Olynyk says that when an outage is caused by a third party that the utility will try to recoup costs from the at-fault party.
