The BC Green MLAs in the BC Legislature support the southern Vancouver Island transportation strategy that was announced today by Minister of Transportation & Infrastructure Claire Trevena.

Adam Olsen, MLA (Saanich North & the Islands).

BC Green spokesperson for transportation and infrastructure, Adam Olsen, MLA (Saanich North and the Islands) issued the following statement:

“I am pleased to see a transportation strategy underway for the southern Vancouver Island. Transportation has been a consistent problem for the region and this process is urgent and long overdue. This is an important first step towards establishing a multi-modal, comprehensive plan for the future,” said Olsen.

He continued: “Effective transportation not only reduces congestion and greenhouse gases – it makes life more affordable, helps local businesses succeed, and allows British Columbians to spend more time with their families. On the southern Vancouver Island it is essential that this process is guided by clear leadership and long-term thinking to address the unique challenges our communities face.”

Today’s announcement also provided a road map for work to identify an emergency detour route for the Malahat section of Highway 1 (Trans Canada) which connects Greater Victoria with upisland communities.

Sonia Furstenau, MLA (Cowichan Valley).

“Vancouver Island is heavily dependent on the Malahat highway. On occasions when that route is closed thousands are cut off from essential services such as medical care. This major concern must be met with swift and thoughtful action,” said Sonia Furstenau, MLA (Cowichan Valley).

“Improving transportation infrastructure in BC was a shared priority in the Confidence and Supply Agreement with the NDP, says Furstenau. “As these files progress we remain actively engaged in fostering accessible, efficient transportation options for British Columbians.”
