Office relocation reduces commute to four minutes

Vacant waterfront property now set up with a double-wide trailer

A double-wide trailer at the oceanfront on Maple Avenue South is a new office location for some Butler Brothers staff.

Setup of a 1,400-sq ft double-wide mobile building near the Sooke Harbour on Thursday means that Butler Brothers owner Brian Butler will be shaving his work commute from 1.25 hours down to four minutes.

That’s good for the environment (fewer fuel emissions daily) and for business productivity (more time at the office, less on the road). His former office was on Keating Cross Rd out on the peninsula in Central Saanich.

The company will not be changing anything about the office location that operates for the concrete facility in the industrial park just off of Sooke Road behind Edward Milne Community School. The new office has nothing to do with the fire at the concrete production location back in mid-February.

This new office space is for Butler and a few other staff who do administration for a number of ancilliary operations under the Butler Brothers umbrella, the company’s owner told West Shore Voice News on Friday.

In operation since the 1970s, Butler Bros produces a range of aggregates at gravel pits in Central Saanich, Sooke and Duncan – from fill materials to specialty products.

Butler said he looked for suitable office space for over a year in both Langford and Sooke, before settling on the mobile unit option. Setting up the mobile unit took just two days. It’s on waterfront property owned by Butler, at the foot of Maple Avenue South. Across the street is a restaurant and a future condo development, and just beyond is the old Government Wharf. It’s a one-minute drive into Sooke town centre.

Brian Butler previously leased that piece of land to the District of Sooke for use as an overflow parking lot for boat trailers and events and at the Prestige Oceanfront Resort… there’s a pathway from the lot through the forest and out to West Coast Road, then the sidewalk that leads to the hotel driveway. It’s a property that would make for fabulous oceanfront residential views, a tourist attraction, or a hub for restaurants, shops and office space.
