The May long weekend for many folks is the unofficial start of summer.
The actual celebration and national statutory holiday is Victoria Day (generally called the May long weekend) which falls on the third weekend in May each year.
This year the dates for the May long weekend run Saturday May 18 through Monday May 20.
In the Greater Victoria area a wide range of events kick off the outdoors season — including fairs and parades — like the Luxton Spring Fair in Langford on Saturday May 18 and Sunday May 19, the Victoria Highland Games at Topaz Park in Victoria on May 18 and May 19, and the Victoria Day Parade along Douglas Street downtown on Monday May 20.
Some indoor events include the Vancouver Island Woodworkers’ Guild wood show (running daily to May 26) at The Arts Centre at Cedar Hill and Astronomy Day at the Royal BC Museum today Saturday May 18.

Travel on the long weekend:
Travel on BC Ferries is traditionally busy on the May long weekend as people also getaway to enjoy natural areas for camping and hiking. Other BC Ferries weekends with heavy traffic loads include BC Day, Canada Day, Labour Day Thanksgiving, Remembrance Day and Christmas.
Motorists are asked to drive safely to avoid accidents and injuries.
