As tested positive during the three-day Christmas weekend period, BC is reporting 6,288 new COVID-19 cases (average of 2,096 per day):
- Dec 24-25 2,552
- Dec 25-26 2,033
- Dec 26-27 1,713
That produces a preliminary total of 241,946 cases, pandemic to date.
Of the new cases, 737 new cases were in Island Health (about 245/day).
Close contact spread:
Christmas season get-togethers will push up numbers; public health orders that restrict the size of gatherings (including six to a table in restaurants) are in place to January 18, 2022.
Bars and nightclubs, and high-exertion fitness facilities, have been ordered closed through to January 18.
Wearing a mask that fits well over your mouth and nose is recommended. Use of the blue medical masks is recommended (or even N95 type if you can get one).
Omicron variant:
Case numbers have been high in the past few weeks during the transmission of the highly transmissible Omicron variant. Last week Provincial Health Officer Dr Henry said that ‘everyone can expect to be exposed to Omicron’, and that contact tracing cannot keep up.
If you have symptoms, you are encouraged by Dr Henry to assume you have COVID, and to advise anyone you’ve had contact with.
Basic stats Dec 28, full update Dec 29:
Tomorrow there will be another basic, preliminary report. The next full regular BC CDC stats are coming on Wednesday Dec 29; Provincial Health Officer Dr Henry and Minister Adrian Dix will livestream a COVID update on that day.
