On a seasonably warm dry Saturday at noon, Sooke folks gathered to hear and view a poetry reading/art exhibition outdoors at the Sooke Region Museum, March 30.
The focus was to celebrate the first Art & Word published collection of local poetry, prose and images. [ISBN: 978-1-9994743-0-0] | Book Review
Coordinating and hosting the 2-hour event was Linda Gordon, president of the Sooke Arts Council. was the presenter/MC of the creative presentation event. Proceeds from the “Art & Word” book by the Sooke Arts Council being sold go towards EMCS scholarship.
In the unbeatable attendance competition of such good weather on the last weekend of spring break, the event drew a small crowd. Less than 10 people heard four presenters.
Linda began the exhibition reading her poems “Enticing Entanglement” accompanied by a photo taken by Caprina Valentine titled “Seaweed Swirl”, and also the poem “The Kiss” accompanied by art called “Winter Love” by Brenda Parkinson.
Linda Green Abraham went up next and began with a poem titled and is about “The Lighthouse” accompanied by a piece called “Sheringham Lighthouse” by Linda Anderson. Her second poem was called “The Old Red Truck” inspired by a painting Brenda Parkinson created titled “Abandoned, But Not Lonely.”
Sue Daniels Ferrie read her poem titled “Forgotten Remembrance” with art by the same name, done in encaustic. This was the last of a series of 14 paintings she created in remembrance of Remembrance Day and will hopefully be in the Canadian War Memorial.
The final presenter, Gregory Varano presented his black and white photograph “Into The Mystic.” The photograph was a montage of two film photographs into one. The photo black and white with a fog surrounding a lady walking away from the camera down a boardwalk, overlaid on a forest photograph. Giving the illusion she is walking into this “loss of forests.” It is a powerful photo speaking on environment loss.
It was an enjoyable event with reflections on how an indoor evening time slot might gather a larger crowd for next time.
On Saturday April 13 the Sooke Arts Council will hold another art show, titled “Time Travel To Port Renfrew.” That event will be an opportunity to “explore Port Renfrew’s past” with artist Diane Moran who will showcase some of the Sooke area’s rich history through a photo exhibition featuring images of the fishing, logging, transportation and prominent families of Port Renfrew circa 1800’s to the early 1980’s.
