The west shore morning and mid-day commute into Victoria is going to get a little tougher this spring. From April 4 through May 17 there will be traffic delays on Island Highway.

Construction work is being done in 280-block Island Highway during that six-week period. That’s a stretch between Helmcken Rd and Stormont Rd. Lane closures will be in effect 9 am to 3 pm, Monday to Friday. That frees up traffic flow again for the commute at work-day’s end.

“The use of an alternate route is recommended,” says the Town of View Royal. That really only leaves Highway 1 as the alternative, which is already congested. Heading into tourist season, this will compound the traffic load on the Highway 1 / Douglas Street corridor where McKenzie Interchange construction continues as well as soon the construction of southbound bus lane from Burnside to Tolmie.

“Expect delays,” says View Royal. Alternating traffic will be in effect. Emergency vehicles will be given priority and have immediate access as required. Traffic control personnel will be in the work zone to assist pedestrians and cyclists.

As a standar precaution during road construction, drivers are asked to lower their vehicle speed and use caution when travelling through the work zone.
