Even before there was the prospect of escaping snow, the Colwood-based Royal Bay Secondary Lacrosse Academy had planned to take part in the Las Vegas Best of the West lacrosse tournament, February 21 to 25.
The five-day adventure for the 18 female students in Gr 9 to 12 includes sightseeing on the Vegas Strip, swimming in the hotel pool, and playing their sport in the heat.
The SD62 board approved the trip at their January 22 board meeting, pending the usual discretionary approval of the Superintendent regarding any issues that might come up regarding the safety of going across the US border.
US immigration restrictions affecting a variable range of persons, backgrounds and passport considerations came into effect January 27, 2017. Since then, the SD62 board has applied discretionary approval to all US-bound field trips. It requires at least one additional parent or chaperone to go along on the trip, in case any of the students for some reason get turned away at the border.
