Police seeking witnesses after pedestrian killed near Duncan

A motor vehicle incident near Duncan today has left one person dead. The encounter was that of a semi-truck impacting a pedestrian near the intersection of Highway 1 (Trans-Canada) and Allenby Road.

RCMP were called to the scene just before 11:30 am. Officers arrived on scene and found the commercial truck had stopped just past the intersection, near where a pedestrian was lying in the road, say RCMP.

One fatality:

One person is dead and police are looking for witnesses. According to local reports, the crash appears to have involved a motorcycle, though RCMP are currently calling it a single vehicle collision.

The victim (an older woman) was pronounced dead at the scene. Police say the truck driver remained on scene and is cooperating with investigators.

The Duncan Fire Department was also called to the scene. An investigator from Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement is on the scene, as is the BC Coroners Service, who will determine the identity of the person killed in the incident. The identity of the deceased will not be publicly released at this time, said RCMP.

Traffic:

Northbound lanes of the highway were closed for several hours, opening up again around 4 pm. That had an impact on traffic on the Malahat, as well as in and out of Langford and Greater Victoria.

Witnesses wanted:

Police are asking anyone who saw the truck before the crash to contact investigators who are reconstructing the scene. North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP and South Vancouver Island Traffic Services are doing the investigation. 

Anyone who witnessed the collision, has dash-cam video, or saw the driving behaviour of the commercial vehicle before the crash is asked to call the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP at 250-416-0352.
