To commemorate the Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III, 20 North Island – Powell River residents will be recognized for their community service with a King Charles III Coronation medal.
NDP MP Rachel Blaney (North Island – Powell River) has been selected to be a partner in this program and will give out the medals.
In April 2024 Blaney announced that she is not running for re-election in the next federal election but being involved in this awards process is clearly an opportunity for her to maintain a profile for the riding and to nicely cap off her high profile career in politics.
Campbell River region:
Members of the North Island – Powell River riding are encouraged to nominate people they feel should be recognized for their community service. That would include residents of Campbell River, the regional districts of Mount Waddington and Strathcona, the Powell River Regional District, Port Alice, the Central Coast Regional District, and the Town of Comox.
There is a strong military service population in the Campbell River area.
About the medal:
The King Charles III Coronation Medal Program recognizes Canadians who exemplify service to others, protection of the environment, youth empowerment, and diversity. Across Canada, 30,000 medals will be handed out to deserving individuals.
“Throughout this riding we have some of the most amazing people doing absolutely tremendous work,” Blaney says. “It’s important we have the opportunity to honour the work they do to make this region such a fantastic place to live and to improve the lives of those around them.”
Nominees can serve in a variety of areas, including as advocates for seniors, Veterans, the environment and rural economic development. Special consideration will be given to those who are educators, healthcare providers, or community workers.
The medal program was first announced three days before the Coronation, on 3 May 2023, by the Prime Minister.
The design of the medal and the details of the program were announced by Rideau Hall on 6 May 2024, first anniversary of the Coronation. The medal is struck in nickel-silver and lacquered to prevent tarnishing. It is manufactured by the Royal Canadian Mint.
The medal is administered by the Chancellery of Honours at Rideau Hall.
“The medal has been awarded to all MPs” according to the Office of the Secretary to the Governor General. MPs would have had to confirm their interest in being a nominating partner in the program in order to seek out award nominations in their local electoral area.
