Every August for as long as the Sooke community can remember (well, since 2005), John Horgan as MLA for what’s now the riding called Langford-Juan de Fuca, has hosted a constituency summer BBQ at Sooke Flats (Sooke River Campground).

Lots of people — with plenty of NDP supporters but open to all, and good food prepared by an army of loyal volunteers — the August BBQ was also an opportunity to present a birthday cake to John and auction off some baked goods as a fundraiser.

The biggest BBQ turnout was in August 2017 after Horgan had quite recently become Premier in July of that year. The loyalists turned up in 2018. Now in 2019, there’s a pause in the action, as the seemingly non-stop Premier takes a vacation this month.

As Juan de Fuca Electoral Area Director Mike Hicks said in his brief speech at the July 1 Sooke Canada Day celebration about Horgan: “He’s the hardest working Premier in Canada … I don’t know how he does it.”
