A federal by-election date of Monday, May 6, 2019 has been set for Nanaimo-Ladysmith. Advance voting will be held on April 26, 27, 28 and 29, 2019.

The announcement came today from the office of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.  Tomorrow March 25, Trudeau will be in Maple Ridge, BC to discuss the housing component of the federal Budget 2019.

The former Member of Parliament for Nanaimo-Ladysmith was Sheila Malcolmson who had quit that post last year, to instead run for MLA for Nanaimo. She won as MLA by a good margin on January 30, which stabilized the NDP’s seat numbers in the provincial legislature.

NDP provincial Nanaimo by-election candidate Sheila Malcolmson was fully supported by BC Premier John Horgan during the January 2019 campaign.

The same strong NDP ground-game that supported Malcolmson in January is expected to pull hard for replacing her old MP spot this spring.  Typically, every NDP resource is drawn upon during election season, including assistants from various constituency offices around the region.

Nanaimo has long been an NDP stronghold, for over 20 years. The current Nanaimo Mayor Leonard Krog is the former NDP MLA for Nanaimo.

The Nanaimo-Ladysmith riding has a population of 122,710 with a present count of 95,200 registered voters. Municipalities in the riding include Nanaimo, Ladysmith, Lantzville, and Cowichan Valley.

Other MP seats held by the NDP on south Vancouver Island include Randall Garrison, MP (Esquimalt-Saanich-Sooke), Alistair MacGregor, MP (Cowichan-Malahat-Langford), and Murray Rankin, MP (Victoria).
