The BC Lottery Corporation (BCLC) is capitalizing on the local interest in the recently ‘decommissioned’ royal couple — Prince Harry and Meghan Markle — who have still retained their titles of Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

BCLC says that “royal fever is sweeping across British Columbia”. They say people are wondering if the Duke and Duchess will settle in Vancouver. In December and at present, the couple who no longer perform royal duties and no longer hold title of His/Her Royal Highness (HRH) have been living in a mansion in North Saanich.

BCLC says that on PlayNow.com, players are invited to wager on if Vancouver will be where they call home.

“If Harry and Meghan buy a house in Vancouver and become residents of the city before the end of 2020, a $10 wager will result in a $20 win (2/1 odds) for BC bettors. In order to win, Harry and Meghan must buy a home in Vancouver and live in it by the end of 2020,” it was stated in a BCLC news release on January 23.

“Interest in the Royal Family has always been high in British Columbia, and this is the third time PlayNow.com has offered novelty bets on Harry and Meghan. Last year, British Columbians bet on the name of Harry and Meghan’s first baby. In 2017, a slate of novelty bets were also offered in anticipation of their royal wedding,” says BCLC.

Novelty bets on PlayNow.com focus on current events and watercooler topics that will capture the interest of non-sports bettors. Other popular novelty bet offerings include U.S. and UK politics, and who will be the next James Bond.
