Signal light activation for the Chidlow Connector Road at Highway 14 (Sooke Road) was done on a grey rainy Wednesday February 2. The signal lights were set into full operational mode at 9 am.
City of Langford Engineering gave the heads up on this traffic pattern change before the end of January, reminding people to be aware of the change and to give drivers, cyclists and pedestrians time to adjust to the new traffic flow.
The Highway 14/Childlow intersection now controls traffic flow in-coming from Metchosin and Sooke to the west, and heading away from the Langford areas of Glen Lake/Luxton/Happy Valley to the east.
Chidlow Connector is now also the access road for the high-traffic commercial construction supply depot of Slegg Lumber.
Previously the Slegg entrance was only a stop-controlled intersection on the busy provincial highway.
Popular retail & supplier access:
All deliveries/visits to Slegg Lumber should now use the Chidlow Connector Road access. Slegg Building Materials is a prominent supplier to the construction industry.
Slegg has 10 locations including Langford, Victoria, Saanichton, Sidney and Duncan.
Impacts of the new intersection:
Some reader comments include dismay over the loss of farm land, and a slower driving experience on Hwy 14.
It will make for a safer entrance/exit for the construction supply store, and will generally slow the speed of traffic in that section where there are curve and less visibility in grey weather.
Use caution:
This new signal light installation is a safety improvement. However, drivers are asked to use caution until everyone gets used to the new traffic pattern, says City of Langford Engineering.
Chidlow progress:
Back on December 23, 2021 at 9 am, the new access entrance to the Slegg Building Materials construction supply store was opened.
On January 25, Langford Engineering said the remainder of the Chidlow Road Connector is now set to open in Spring 2022.
