Since just ahead of the first round of snow on February 8, Langford road maintenance has been top of mind for the municipality.

“We have extra crews on plowing and salting. As long as it gets above freezing we will make some headway,” says Langford Mayor Stew Young today.

But he adds: “Until this weather warms up and stops snowing, exercise caution and don’t drive unless you have proper snow tires or driving 4×4.  Safety for our snow crews and first responders while they are out doing their job is paramount,” Young said.

About 200 tonnes of salt were applied to Langford roadways in the first five days of the storm, according to engineering staff.

The City outlined in a release today February 13: “As safety continues to be our number one priority for our residents, employees working in Langford, crews working 24/7 to clear our roads and first responders, we ask residents to stay at home if possible, businesses to limit all non-essential vehicular activity, and those on the road to respect winter conditions and your fellow travellers.”

Use common sense when driving, be respectful of other drivers, and travel slow. Give good distance. Stay off roads unless a necessity.

Langford City Hall remains open, but will have reduced staff on hand today Wednesday. If you have an emergency please call 911, if you have a non-emergency issue please email to engineering@langford.ca or call the city’s general line at 250-478-7882.

The City is asking again that all vehicles parked on the streets be moved into driveways or garages as soon as possible.  “If your road is not passable due to parked vehicles it makes it very challenging to plow or to turn the plows around,” says City engineer Michelle Mahovlich.” Please do not park blocking cul-de-sac bulbs or other turnaround areas including marked fire gates.”

Also, don’t use ATVs on city roads, as this creates a hazard to plows and other drivers.

The City will be closely monitoring the situation throughout the day and will provide updates accordingly.
