Travellers are advised to expect traffic congestion on Highway 1 (Trans Canada Highway) through Langford on the Canada Day weekend.

Highway 1 gets increased traffic during busy long weekends, from Veterans Memorial Parkway through Goldstream Park (which includes the steep-grade and curvy Malahat section).

People will probably start travelling tomorrow Friday June 30 if heading upisland for a 4-day long weekend. Canada Day is always July 1. This year that falls on a Saturday.

“Expect delays during peak times,” says City of Langford Engineering. “Consider travelling outside peak times from Friday June 30 through to Monday July 3.”

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MOTI) also says to expect traffic congestion on the Malahat (Highway 1).

Peak times are noted as early afternoon to early evening (2 pm to 7 pm).

Through-traffic is asked to avoid using Finlayson Arm Road as it is a narrow minor road intended for residential/business access only.

No Malahat construction disruptions:

MOTI says there will not be any traffic disruptions at the Malahat Tunnel Hill project site starting noon Friday June 30. That will be the case, as well, through the Canada Day long weekend — though construction speed limits will be in effect. Roadwork will resume at 8 am on Tuesday July 4.

Also Highway 4:

MOTI also notes that Highway 4 (at Cameron Lake) — a route to Tofino — can expect traffic congestion.
