Improvements continue on Highway 14 continue to April 30.
At the moment, work is focused on the intersection of Sooke River Road and Highway 14 (Sooke Road), where intersection traffic signal lights will be installed.
Running parallel to Highway 14 is Edward Milne Road, which provides access to Edward Milne Community School. The installation of sidewalks is underway along that stretch. The board of Sooke School District 62 has expressed pleasure at the addition of the future sidewalks as part of safety for students walking to school.
Sooke River Road allows access to Edward Milne Road on which there is a small store and restaurant as well as access to an industrial site beyond. Sooke River Road is also the way to Sooke Potholes and the Charters River Salmon Interpretive Centre.
Improvements on Highway 14 are set to run through to April 30, with signage to that effect on display to traffic going both westbound and eastbound on the provincial highway, on both sides of the construction zone.
The improvements to Highway 14 were first announced by Premier John Horgan on January 19, 2018 in a roadside media event held in the BC Transit park and ride lot, just about where the construction is underway now.
During 2018 there were improvements made on sections of the highway east of Sooke itself, including the installation of bus pullouts, road widening (for the addition of bike lanes), and the introduction of LED and reflective directional arrow signage to assist with nighttime driving. The width of lines on the road was also expanded, to help with visibility during wet and dark driving conditions.
