The World Health Organization issued their first novel coronavirus bulletin on January 21, 2020, later naming the new virus as COVID-19; a six-month report was released August 2, 2020. In BC, Dr Bonnie Henry expects the pandemic to continue into 2021, 2022 and beyond.

The COVID-19 situation in British Columbia is continually evolving, and the information below is current as of 3 p.m. on Wednesday, May 6, 2020.

Cases:

Today the total confirmed cases in B.C is 2,255 which includes 23 new cases since yesterday. Of those, 74 people with COVID-19 infection are in hospital (of which 19 are in intensive care).

In BC, 1,494 people have recovered from COVID-19 but 124 people have died (almost all of them seniors in the 23 long-term care or assisted living facilities that have experienced outbreaks).

At present there are 17 long-term care and assisted-living homes outbreaks, with five outbreaks in acute-care units.

The distribution of cases by region shows the greater number of infections in the Lower Mainland (Fraser Health and Vancouver Coastal Health) where there are outbreaks in long-term care homes, three poultry processing plants, and a federal correctional institution: Fraser Health: 1,046 | Vancouver Coastal Health: 852 | Interior Health: 179 | Island Health: 124 | Northern Health: 54
