If you’re travelling on Highway 1 on the Malahat, it’s important that your vehicle be equipped for winter weather.
Today Friday December 2, Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MOTI) vehicle safety staff will be checking vehicles northbound on Highway 1 (Trans Canada) as entering at West Shore Parkway, and vehicles southbound in the Malahat section at Butterfield Road.
The checks will be from 2 pm to 8 pm. This is in anticipation of predicted snowfalls.
Earlier snowfall this week saw a lot of cars stuck on the winding and steep grade of the Malahat stretch of Highway 1 between Langford and Mill Bay.
Commercial vehicles must carry chains. All personal vehicles must have mud and snow/winter tires in place.
“Don’t travel on the Malahat in adverse road conditions if your vehicle is not properly equipped, for the safety of you and those driving around you,” says City of Langford Engineering.
Winter tires:
Winter tires are mandatory from October 1 through March 31 when travelling on many BC highways. Signs are posted on these designated highways to advise drivers where and when winter tires are required.
Vehicles not equipped with winter tires are prohibited from travelling past the signs. These designated winter tire routes are posted online by MOTI.
ICBC says that both the all-season Mud and Snow (M+S) tires and the mountain/snowflake tires meet the requirements for winter tire designation in B.C.
To be considered a winter tire, a M+S or a mountain/snowflake tire must also have at least 3.5mm of tread depth.
Tell your local tire retailer what kind of road and weather conditions you drive in, so you get tires that are best suited for your needs, says ICBC on the ICBC Winter Tire Information page.
