Remuneration was “due to be updated” said a background report in the June 17 Langford Council meeting agenda. The last pay-hike for Langford Mayor and Council was 13 years ago.
“Over that time, Langford’s population and Council workload have grown, while the City has built and maintained a stable tax base and continued to be desirable and affordable for families… Council has been paid at a level for a community half its size.” Langford’s population is now over 40,000.
The Administration and Finance Committee on June 11 recommended the changes to the Salary Policy.
The motion for the pay increase was approved at the June 17 council meeting. The mayor now receives $1.93 per capita and councillors receive 70 cents per capita (or a bit more if serving as acting mayor).
Being phased in over 2019-2023, Mayor Stew Young will now receive $75,863 per year (up from $37,558) while councillors Denise Blackwell, Matt Sahlstrom, Lanny Seaton, Lillian Szpak, Norma Stewart, and Roger Wade will receive $27,410 (up from $17,661) phased in over 2019 and 2020.
The supplemental pay for being an acting mayor is $828 per month. Health and dental benefits for Mayor and Council will cost the city about $24,000 per year.
