Premier John Horgan will be on the Nanaimo by-election campaign trail today and tomorrow, January 18 and 19, supporting NDP candidate Sheila Malcolmson on the campaign trail as well as in meetings with community groups and campaign volunteers.
Horgan will deliver a speech to the BC NDP Provincial Council at 10 am. That takes place at the Coast Bastion Hotel.
Meanwhile, online, the BC Liberal by-election candidate for Nanaimo, Tony Harris, will be hosting a live question-and-answer at 2 pm on Saturday, January 19. Today Harris released his Priorities for Nanaimo statement, focused on making Nanaimo “an even better place to work, work and raise our families”.
Areas indicated for improvement line up with NDP priorities: indigenous relations, transportation and transit, affordable housing, common sense in tax policy, emergency prep, environment, education, technology, port expansion, homelessness and poverty reduction, crime and safety, and child care.
This similarity in identification of issues indicates the BC Liberals generally in agreement with what’s important and necessary for Nanaimo and the province, but trying to tip the voter decision-making toward choosing the better candidate rather than pitting philosophies against each other.
There are six candidates on the ballot for the January 30, 2019 by-election.

Residents of the Nanaimo electoral district are eligible to vote in the by-election if they are:
• 18 or older on January 30, 2019,
• a Canadian citizen, and
• a resident of British Columbia since July 29, 2018.
General Voting Day is Wednesday, January 30. Advance voting will be available from Tuesday, January 22 to Sunday, January 27. Eligible voters can also vote at the Nanaimo district electoral office from now until 4 p.m. on January 30, or by mail.
