Thoughts on the Liberal leadership race, on the eve of Liberal Party of Canada members voting for a new leader.
I’m not too interested because Carney will win. People don’t like Freeland, and the other candidates aren’t close.

The Liberals have a good chance of winning an election if Carney calls it immediately. Given the chance as PM, Carney will likely implement a pro-business austerity program like the one used by the Liberals in the early 90s when they killed all social housing funding (and other programs) in order to ‘balance the budget’.
With Liberals like that, who needs Conservatives?
Poilievre is like a Christmas tree – he looked good in December, but as the calendar flipped to 2025, he’s been shedding (votes). It’s now March, and he’s patchy and brown. Fewer people are interested in voting for a Trump-and-Convoy adjacent one-trick pony in the current political environment.
And on that last point: that sentiment is also leading to a predictable – and welcome – splintering of BC’s Trump-and-Convoy adjacent conspiracy party, the BC Conservatives.
Within chaos, there is opportunity.
Editor’s Notes:
- During his campaign, Carney has mentioned the importance of Canada’s social safety net.
- Registered Liberal Party of Canada members may vote up to 3 pm Eastern (12 noon Pacific).
- Televised coverage of the leadership voting will be carried on national TV starting 1 pm Pacific.
- After a leader is chosen, there will be a transition process of prime minister shifting from Justin Trudeau to the newly elected Liberal leader (expected within a matter of days after the March 9 vote).
