Today Elections BC has reported on fundraising intake by major political parties during Q3 of this year (July 1 to Sept 30, 2024).
- Top dollars were raised by the BC Conservatives at $3,390,562, with the BC NDP bringing in $3,010,166.
- BC Greens brought in $608,134.
- BC United raised $456,298 but had pulled out of the race.
Allowances to the parties:
Every vote counts in terms of election results (i.e. who gets elected as MLAs). But each vote also counts toward a payment to political parties for their operations.
Under the Election Act, registered political parties are eligible to receive an annual allowance if the party’s candidates in the most recent general election received at least 2% of the total number of valid votes cast in all electoral districts, or at least 5% of the total number of valid votes cast in the electoral districts in which the party endorsed candidates.
Eligible parties receive $1.75 per valid vote received in the last general election. This amount is adjusted annually for changes to the consumer price index.
The estimated allowance amounts for 2025 are as follows:
- BC NDP: $1,746,000
- BC Conservatives: $1,684,000
- BC Greens: $321,000
Elections BC says those amounts will be updated in January 2025 using the final vote count from the 2024 Provincial General Election and changes to the consumer price index.
Annual allowances are paid in two installments, on January 15 and July 15 each year. For past annual allowance amounts paid, see the Annual Allowances page.
These funds are spent on party operations, over and above the regular expenditures for running of the BC Legislative Assembly and paying MLAs (which are covered by the BC Government).
