Some new pickleball courts are coming to Westshore Parks and Recreation in the west shore!

West Shore Parks & Recreation (WSPR) is excited to announce that they’re taking the first steps toward the construction of six new outdoor pickleball courts.

With the sport continuing to grow in popularity among all ages and abilities, WSPR is committed to enhancing recreational opportunities for the community.

This project comes in response to overwhelming community interest and a consistently strong demand for additional pickleball facilities.

Fastest growing sport!

Pickleball is the fastest growing sport in Canada. It combines elements of tennis, badminton and table tennis. It’s played in a fun and inclusive environment for all ages and abilities.

At WSPR pickleball can be played indoors and currently on two outdoor courts. Lessons available (intro, fundamentals, skills). Drop-in or reserve a court with friends.

Getting the RFP rolling:

Back in June the WSPR board approved a motion to direct staff to begin preparing a Request for Proposal (RFP) for the pickleball court project.

No additional taxes:

The construction of the pickleball courts will not require any additional tax requisitions from residents, and the 2024 budget will not be impacted, says Grant Brown, CEO, WSPR.

The use of funds from the general capital works reserve ensures that the project can move forward without financial strain.

Health and wellness:

“I’m really excited about these new pickleball courts opening and what it represents for communities in Westshore,” says WSPR Society Chairperson, Damian Kowalewich.

“This prioritizes the physical health and wellness of our residents and shows that we are prepared to meet the demand of this growing sport. Amenities like this contribute to a high quality of life for residents of all ages and allow individuals to stay active playing this popular sport,” said Kowalewich.

Location:

The new pickleball courts will replace the current beach volleyball courts located next to the tennis courts on the back field of the WSPR property.

This location was selected due to its distance from residential areas, which minimizes noise concerns, and the availability of ample parking and nearby washrooms, making it an ideal spot for expanded recreation opportunities.

Westshore Parks & Recreation is located at 1767 Island Highway, home to the Juan de Fuca Rec Centre and The Q Centre.
