What has in recent years become an annual gathering of Canada’s 13 provincial and territorial premiers, the 2024 Council of the Federation (COF) meeting will be held this summer in Halifax.
The meetings will be held July 15 to 17, with a closing news conference on July 17.
The host is Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston.
The Premiers met in Halifax for a Health Summit last fall, November 5-6, 2023.
Seeking cooperative federalism:
“Premier Houston and his colleagues will continue their discussion on revitalizing cooperative federalism in Canada, an issue Premiers highlight in their post-budget letter to the Prime Minister,” it was stated in a COF news release today.
Wide range of issues:
COF says the issues that “matter most to Canadians” are housing and affordability, health care, infrastructure, energy, Canada-US relations, emergency preparedness and response, and Arctic security.
Previous summer meetings:
The 2022 COF summer meeting was held in Victoria (hosted by then Premier John Horgan), and in 2023 was held in Winnipeg, Manitoba (hosted by then-Premier Heather Stefanson).
There was no meeting in 2021 (a federal election year), and in 2020 an all-premiers conference call was held virtually during the pandemic. The 2019 summer meeting had been held in Saskatoon.
List of COF meetings.
Western Premiers:
The Western Premiers have gathered in June 2023 and again this year, with BC Premier David Eby attending both.
