New Saturday hours at Hartland Landfill will get rolling on June 15, 2024.

The new Saturday hours will be 7 am to 5 pm. That increases the number of hours by three. It’s a pilot for one year.

Hartland Landfill services the Greater Victoria area.

Weekday hours remain Monday to Friday, 9 am to 5 pm.

The landfill will continue to be closed on Sundays and statutory holidays.

Easier and more accessible:

The Capital Regional District (CRD) expects the additional hours will offer more convenience to help make recycling and waste disposal easier and more accessible while reducing wait times for site access.

Presuming that households and others may have more time on Saturdays to make their way to the Hartland Landfill at #1 Hartland Avenue in West Saanich, the goal of the pilot project is to increase the amount of recyclable material collected.

Reducing recyclables in garbage:

CRD also aims to decrease the amount of recyclable material in the garbage. Their goal is to help the region to reduce waste by one third.

Increased customer use:

Hartland Landfill has seen an increase in customers using the pay-by-weight bin area and the recycling/household hazardous waste area.

This can lead to long line-ups on Hartland Avenue, particularly at peak times (Mondays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and any morning following a holiday).

New material bans on clean and treated wood waste and asphalt shingles, coming into effect at Hartland Landfill in 2024, may further increase the demand at the public drop-off depot.
