This weekend there was a block party in the Westhills area of Langford.
That’s a fast-growing community, now celebrating 1,000 homes and getting underway to produce 1,000 more.
The new housing will be townhomes, condos, rental apartments and single family homes with secondary suites, said Westhills Land Corp manager Ryan McKenzie back in April.
The first 1,000 homes were primarily single-family homes — many with suites or built to be redeveloped with suites, and some with carriage homes as a separate unit on the same property. Those housing styles will be less prevalent in the newer sections of Westhills.
The June 1st block party held at Atlas Drive and Centauri Drive was almost a surreal mix of family playzone and construction site.
There were kids’ games, barbecue lunch, and free T-shirt giveaways. The Q 100.3 radio station was on hand, and a live band.
Skies were overcast but no one seemed to mind. Parking was a bit of a challenge amidst tight streets in a built-up area.
The new SD62 schools (Pexsisen Elementary School and Centre Mountain Leillum Middle School) that opened in Fall 2022 are nearby to the area, within walking distance.
But it was a dead-ringer of an opportunity for people to see the housing construction and will no doubt talk to all their friends about it.
It appears a good time was had by all.
