On a bright but cold Sunday morning, the 2019 Wounded Warriors runners made a pit stop at Bear Mountain in Langford, to celebrate the last day of their run.

Starting from Port Hardy on February 25, the runners covered 600 km on their seven-day fundraising journey, finishing up at the BC Legislature on Sunday afternoon, March 3.

At Bear Mountain, Langford Mayor Stew Young presented the Wounded Warriors organization with a $10,000 donation, half of which was contributed by the Westshore Developers Association.

Mayor Young said over the five years that Langford has supported the group that provides trauma-support services to veterans and first responders, that he sees the services being of benefit. He hopes that other politicians “learn more about this”, he told the small crowd gathered indoors.

Organizers announced that the goal of $100,000 had been met — and even surpassed — this year. Last year the Wounded Warriors Run on Vancouver Island raised $80,000, said Wounded Warriors Run BC organizer Jacqueline Zweng.

An example of how local first responders are impacted and may seek trauma support is having handled the two recent car crashes within a few weeks (each with a fatality) on Highway 1 near Leigh Road within Langford earlier this year.

At the Bear Mountain welcome, runners were greeted as they arrived and congratulated for their efforts by Mayor Stew Young, Councillors Lillian Szpak, Lanny Seaton and Norma Stewart, and Langford Fire Chief Chris Aubrey.

Three PTSD service dogs were in attendance with their owner-partners.

Funds are used for counselling support, training, and services. There is also a scholarship fund.

This year, the Langford Fire Rescue Service partnered with Wounded Warriors Canada, made official at an event on January 15 at Langford Fire Hall #1.
