On Sunday morning September 22, Alistair MacGregor, MP (Cowichan-Malahat-Langford) joined fellow community members for the annual Quw’utsun Sta’lo’ Skweyul (Cowichan River Day).
MacGregor says all of the stakeholders “care deeply about our mighty Cowichan River”.
“Our watershed’s health has been one of my guiding stars for the last nine years as MP for Cowichan-Malahat-Langford,” said MacGregor.
He participated in nine years of advocacy to raise the Cowichan Weir which will allow more water to be strategically released to ensure healthier river flows during extended dry and hot summer months.
“I take great pride in collaborating with the many water stewards in our region, including members of the Cowichan Watershed Board, the Cowichan Stewardship Roundtable, and Cowichan Tribes,” said MacGregor in his summer newsletter to constituents.
The Province of BC supports the Cowichan Weir project, making a BC Cowichan Weir announcement in March 2024.
MacGregor and the NDP also support transitioning salmon farms out of coastal waters with a ‘real jobs plan’ for workers and coastal communities.
House of Commons this fall:
MacGregor was back on Vancouver Island this past weekend for community events, but has returned to Ottawa as the House of Commons is in active session.
MacGregor has been the MP for Cowichan-Malahat-Langford since 2015 (re-elected in 2019 and 2021).
The current parliamentary calendar shows the House of Commons in session to Dec 17, 2024. However, a federal election might be called this fall.
During the provincial election season that is currently happening in BC, MacGregor says he hopes to see wins for BC NDP candidates Dana Lajeunesse (in Juan de Fuca-Malahat), Debra Toporowski (in Cowichan Valley), and Ravi Parmar (in Langford-Highlands).
