Wednesday, October 3 ~ LANGFORD. The Tour de Rock cyclists arrived in Westhills and stopped for photos and a community meet-and-greet at Belmont Secondary School over the noon hour today.
The West Shore Developers Association donated $1,000 as part of hosting the barbecue lunch on the patio outside the school.
Riders and community had a relaxed and upbeat interface, something the team does in every community along their route during the September 22 to October 5 two-week, 1,000-km ride.
This afternoon they will also visit Colwood Elementary and Happy Valley Elementary in Colwood, then up to Journey Middle School in Sooke, then back down to Langford for a fundraising dinner event at Bear Mountain.
On Thursday the riders make their way through schools in Victoria, Saanich and Esquimalt. The finale is at Spirit Square in downtown Victoria at 5 pm on October 5.
This year’s event goal is $1.25 million and so far (to 1:30 pm on October 3) the website shows that $577,738.42 has been raised.
Over 20 years to date, Tour de Rock has raised more than $24 million for pediatric cancer research and support programs, and has spawned three other similar Cops for Cancer rides elsewhere in BC. The 2018 team will add to that fundraising total.
