As of 4 pm today, 2,383 BC Hydro customers were without power on South Vancouver Island (in seven outage locations).
At that time, 722 customers were impacted in the Langford/Highlands and Malahat areas, 1,569 in Metchosin/Sooke, 68 in North Cowichan, and 70 on Pender Island. All outages are listed as having started sometime after 3 pm.
Then at 4:19 pm the number of impacted customers jumped up to 4,624 as more BC Hydro billing addresses in the Sooke and Otter Point area including Phillips Road and Young Lake lost power.
There have been high winds for most of the day, picking up steam in the early afternoon. Currently the gusts are up to 52 km/h according to Environment Canada.
The Environment Canada weather forecast for tonight in the Victoria area is for wind west 30 km/h except 60 near Juan de Fuca Strait early this evening, with wind becoming light this evening.
This was a relatively short-lived outage during daylight hours in otherwise normal spring-time weather (bright skies, no rain). Some areas were restored between 4:30 and 5:30 pm, though as of 5:37 pm there were 1,578 customer addresses remaining without power.
An equipment failure in 900-block of Langford Parkway (in the Westhills-area commercial zone) caused an outage for 23 commercial customers from 3:17 pm to 10:49 pm.
