As of August 13, 2024 the Old Man Lake wildfire is under control, with a total of 230 hectares burned.
A wildfire in the Sooke region was first reported on July 22 with a size of 30 hectares.
Call the Old Man Lake Wildfire, by July 26 the wildfire size had increased to 188 hectares.
Now a week after the first report of fire, at July 29 morning the burned area had increased to 230 hectares.
By Friday July 26 the fire was “trending away from the community and watershed”, according to the BC Wildfire Service.
At Sunday July 28 the “west flank along the Sooke River is 100% contained,” according to BC Wildfire Service, as reported on the District of Sooke Emergency Operations Centre Page. This flank was previously reported as being “almost” contained.
As of Monday morning July 29 (9:45 am) the District of Sooke posted: “With 100% of the west flank contained and good progress being made on the southern and northern flanks, along with some precipitation and cooler temperatures, much of the resources previously supporting the EOC will return to regular duties. Over the next week, regular district service levels should start returning to normal. Of course, the District is prepared to enhance the EOC if the situation changes.
Today July 30: The Old Man Lake Wildfire wis classified as ‘being held.’
“The CRD is immensely grateful to BC Wildfire, District of Sooke staff & firefighters, Sooke RCMP, T’Sou-ke First Nation, CRD staff & all others for keeping our communities safe,” as posted on X by the Capital Regional District.
