A ticket purchased at Western Foods in Sooke led to a big lottery win for local resident Joan Hughes.

Her Luxury Crossword scratch-and-win ticket produced a $100,000 prize. Overall approximate odds to win a prize on a $10 Luxury Crossword are 1 to 3.25.

The Luxury Crossword ticket can win more than one prize, but only one prize may be claimed for each of PUZZLES 1 through 6. Words within words are not eligible for a prize.

Saving the prize:

Hughes plans to save her prize funds, says BCLC in a news release today.

The happy winner plans to otherwise celebrate her win with her daughter-in-law over coffee and cake.

Cost of living:

In today’s real estate market in Sooke, $100,000 would be about eight percent the price of a single family home in that community. The February 2022 Victoria Real Estate Board average sale price of a single family home in Sooke was $1,231,188; the Greater Victoria average house sale price last month was $1,429,618.

Last week (on March 16) it was reported by Statistics Canada that the Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 5.7 percent in February from a year earlier, up from 5.1 percent in January. That’s a 30-year high.

Supply chain interruptions caused now by overall by the war situation in Europe, earlier this year during the trucker convoys, and last year during COVID work-impacted situations have led to cost increases on many things across the board, especially where transportation of products is required.

This week a CP Rail workers strike will further disrupt supply chains of materials that are mostly used to produce other end-products (causing a ripple effect in the cost of many other products).

Generally speaking, wages have not been keeping up with inflation or the cost of living, for many years now.
