The Coronation banner for King Charles III was raised up the flag pole at BC Government House today around 11:30 am.
Presiding was Janet Austin, Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia.
The moment was to mark the start of celebrations for the Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III.
Guests continued to arrive after the banner raising, for “The Big Lunch” reception at Government House including Dr Bonnie Henry, Victoria Mayor Marianne Alto, Metchosin Mayor Marie-Térèse Little, former Sooke RCMP Detachment Commander Steve Wright, and many other dignitaries.
Guests to the reception are members of the Lieutenant Governor’s honorary patronages.
The raising of the banner was accompanied by pipers Pipe Major Maguire and Gerald Kennedy from the Canadian Scottish Regiment Pipes and Drums. The rain evidently put a damper on what might have been more of an outdoor ceremony.
The LG’s office will release an official statement tomorrow, on the day of the May 6, 2023 Coronation.
The Coronation will be televised live from London, England by media around the world. In BC (Pacific Time) the broadcast coverage on Saturday May 6 will start at 12 am on CTV, 1 am on CBC, and 2 am on Global TV.
While mainstream media carry discourse about the relevance and public opinion about the monarchy, the institution is over 1,000 years old and is likely continue being ‘steady as she goes’, with King Charles III putting his own emphasis on the job. His interests include protecting the environment, about which he was decades ahead of his time.
