Outdoor yard burning for the purpose of yard cleanup is presently allowed in the District of Sooke but is now strongly discouraged given the COVID-19 pandemic. Note this is different than what Mayor Maja Tait said in her brief statement on YouTube on March 16, where she said open burning is prohibited.
“In consideration of the health and well being of the community and your neighbours – despite fires currently being permitted to allow yard cleanup – the Fire Department recommends that residents consider postponing their burning while people are being asked to stay at home to help flatten the curve of the COVID-19 pandemic,” it was stated by the District of Sooke in a news release this afternoon, Friday March 20.
“If you must burn, please be considerate of your neighbours and be mindful of, and minimize, smoke by ensuring debris is dry, shorten burning periods and move piles as far away from property lines and structures as possible.”
COVID-19 is a respiratory illness. Anyone whose lungs get irritated ahead of possibly acquiring COVID-19 will have a tougher time dealing with the infection. This is about consideration for one’s neighbours.
The District Fire Department says to familiarize yourself with the burning regulations and be sensitive to those around you.
