As reported in detail by West Shore Voice News back in August, the City of Langford had been organizing to acquire a 22-acre property at 3680 Trans Canada Highway in the Malahat area.
The nearly $2.2 million property has been purchased and will be paid for over three years.
The motion passed by Langford Council in July allows for eco-tourism and recreation uses at the oceanfront property on Finlayson Arm. Several proposed used had to be dropped from the original motion (things like hotel and camping as ‘possible uses’ were dropped), which saw acquisition of the property go through several meetings in council including with a group of local residents.
This past week the city relaunched this news, reiterating that training for on-water sports will be available at the site, including use of the site by Rowing BC.
The City will be working with Pacifica Paddlesports on programming that will be affordable for local families. School groups through SD62 may also be using the site for sport academy activities.
The property presently has two structures – a boathouse for watercraft storage and a log cabin for group functions and events such as small retreats.
The new facility is next door to the long-standing Goldstream Boathouse Marina commercial venture which provides power-supplied moorage and fuelling.
The location of these properties is at the bottom of a steep grade, where the waterfront is sheltered from most coastal storms.
