An early-morning fire today outside Drinkwater Elementary School in Cowichan Valley School District (SD79) led to a decision to cancel classes at the school due to smoky halls and classrooms.
“The small fire was quickly extinguished by the North Cowichan Fire Department and is now being investigated by the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP,” it was stated in a news release from SD79 early today at 6:38 am.
The proximity of the fire to the school caused smoke to be in the hallways and classrooms. Due to that fact, the Fire Department recommended the cancelling of classes for today so they could work to clear it.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Drinkwater Elementary is located at 6236 Lane Rd in Duncan, with a student population of 375.
There are 17 elementary schools and five secondary schools in the Cowichan District.
