Premier David Eby’s new BC NDP cabinet will be sworn-in on Monday November 18 at Government House. That starts at 1 pm. The ceremony will be livestreamed (click the link to watch).
That’s after government caucus MLAs being sworn-in on November 13.
“It’s more important than ever that we get down to work together to help people with costs, improve healthcare and build strong communities in a strong economy. Together, we can make BC a place where everyone can build a good life,” said Premier Eby in social media today.
Transition process:
The organizational process of Eby’s continuation of a BC NDP government is being co-chaired by Doug White, Premier’s special counsel on Indigenous reconciliation together with Shannon Salter, the Premier’s deputy minister and head of the public service.
That process called the “transition period” spans the results of the election until the swearing-in of a new cabinet.
“During that time, the transition team will make recommendations to the PRemier regarding the formation of ministries and structures across government as well as the selection of new cabinet ministers,” it was stated in a release from the Premier’s office on November 6.
The Premier will present his recommendations for cabinet to BC Lieutenant Governor Janet Austin “thereby establishing the new government”.
Opposition MLAs:
- BC Conservative MLAs will be sworn-in on November 12. The BC Conservatives with 46 seats are the Official Opposition in the BC Legislature. John Rustad is the leader of the Conservative Party of BC.
- BC Green Party MLAs will be sworn-in on November 12. Sonia Furstenau is the leader of the BC Green Party but did not achieve re-election; two MLAs will be sworn in.
Election aftermath:
The swearing-in dates have been set based on judicial recounts and reporting information from Elections BC.
The 2024 BC Election was held on October 19. With a slim majority of 47 seats in 43rd BC Parliament, Eby has some tough choices to make in terms of filling top cabinet posts like finance, health, and education.
There are fewer experienced MLAs and former cabinet ministers to choose from, as many of those BC NDP MLAs either did not seek re-election or loss their bid for re-election.
Island Social Trends offered editorial commentary on cabinet possibilities, in an article on October 28.
