NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh will speak to media and voters outside the MetroTown Skytrain Station in Burnaby today at 1 pm, following the federal government announcement today of three federal by-elections for Monday February 25 to be held in Outremont, York Simcoe and Burnaby South.

Singh is the candidate in Burnaby South. A win there for him would provide a higher profile for the NDP in the House of Commons in this election year. The NDP base is strong in BC, with Singh expected to receive a lot of ground-team support.

The Burnaby South seat was left vacant when the former MP there — Kennedy Stewart — was successful in becoming the mayor of Vancouver in October 2018.

The next federal election is set for October 21, 2019.

Getting to know the BC political landscape, Singh visited in the west shore of the Greater Victoria area in November. He was hosted by Alistair MacGregor, MP (Cowichan-Malahat-Langford) at two public events at the Belmont Secondary School in Langford — one for students and one for the general public.

The Outremont riding in Quebec has been held mostly by NDP, most recently by former NDP Leader Tom Mulcair who retired in June 2018.

Updates to come.
