NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh will join by-election candidate Bob Chamberlin in Nanaimo-Ladysmith on Monday April 15 to outline the national NDP’s commitment to make housing more affordable.
Singh and Chamberlin will make an announcement at 2 pm at the southeast corner of Franklyn and Selby in downtown Nanaimo. They they will host a public conservation on housing affordability in the evening.
The Monday evening ‘Taking on Ottawa for more affordable housing’ conversation with Singh and Chamberlin starts at 6 pm at the Bee’s Knees Café, 208 Wallance St, downtown Nanaimo/
Singh will also be campaigning with Chamberlin in Nanaimo-Ladysmith during the day on Tuesday.
Chamberlin’s campaign office at 486 Franklyn St was officially opened on Saturday April 6 with provincial MLAs Sheila Malcolmson (Nanaimo) and Doug Routley (Nanaimo-North Cowichan) also on hand for the event.
NDP organizers say that during the past week since Bob Chamberlin won the NDP nomination in Nanaimo-Ladysmith that his campaign team has knocked on hundreds of doors and spoken to hundreds of voters.
The Nanaimo-Ladysmith May 6 by-election call came March 24 as announced by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Advance voting will be available on April 26, 27, 28 & 29.
This sees voters returning to the polls for a third time in just over seven months (for Mayor in October 2018, MLA on January 30, and now MP coming up May 6). Malcolmson had quit her role as NDP MP to successfully run as MLA for the Nanaimo riding; the MLA position was vacant following NDP MLA Leonard Krog’s successful run to become Nanaimo’s mayor.
Also running in the Nanaimo-Ladysmith by-election are Michelle Corfield (Liberal), Paul Manly (Green), John Hirst (Conservative), and Jennifer Clarke (People’s Party of Canada).
Whoever wins the by-election will represent the Nanaimo-Ladysmith riding for just a few months and probably roll right into general election campaigning. The 2019 federal election is set for Monday, October 21.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau paid a quick pop-in visit to Nanaimo on March 25, with a stroll along Nanaimo’s Harbourfront Walkway.
