A magnitude 7.5 earthquake was reported this afternoon, April 2, at 4:58 pm Pacific time (about 8 am April 3 in Taiwan).
The quake happened 13 miles from Hualien City, Taiwan, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Tsunami Warning System.
According to the USGS, the epicenter was farther than 100 miles from a city.
There was some damage to buildings reported in Taipei, according to CBC News which also reported that some nearby Japanese islands might also expect aftershocks.
In the last 10 days, there have been no earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 or greater centered nearby.
The earthquake occurred at a depth of 7.1 miles (11.42 km).
