Installation of a new traffic signal intersection light at Langford Parkway and Langford Lake Road is likely a very welcome traffic improvement for businesses, residents and commuters in the Westhills area.

That’s a busy intersection, with the busy West Shore Parkway roundabout in close proximity to the west of it (line painting done there yesterday). Two new SD62 schools will open nearby on Constellation Avenue in September. Belmont Secondary School is also in the area, on Langford Lake Road.

Business and services in the area include office buildings, library, YM-YWCA, and Tim Hortons.

Daytime traffic interruptions:

Installation construction will be done June 1 through July 4, from 7 am to 5 pm. Traffic delays are to be expected, says City of Langford Engineering.

Traffic control will be on-site, directing traffic. Delays may be expected.

===== PUBLIC COMMENT:

So far these comments have been made to Island Social Trends in response to the above announcement:

city of langford, tax ad, 2022
  • “Should be a disaster for traffic at the end of the day. When school lets out at Belmont the traffic already backs up Langford Parkway into the traffic circle. Lights at this intersection will guarantee backups into that circle. Poor planning here.” ~ Emile Lapointe
  • “Shouldn’t it be another roundabout?” ~ Troy Jackson
  • “Oh but it’s so fun turning left out of the West Hills from here.” ~ Justen Lyle
  • “Hope left turns out of Westhills is enhanced so we shortcutters aren’t delayed!” ~ Ron McNeil

===== MAYOR’s COMMENT:

Langford Mayor Stew Young says that upgrading of the intersection has always been in the city’s transportation plan.

Usually these sorts of upgrades are within a five-year plan. If funds from developers come in as part of a development, street improvements will be done at that time, he told Island Social Trends.
